Should I recruit bats as well

Yes definitely, bats face no obstacles while reaching to their targets so it is good to have some bats in your inventory when you go to battlefield.

What is best strategy to deploy units?

You can deploy in small groups to make sure that they can destroy specific defenses, deploying all at one place is not wise as some defenses trigger splash damage. It wise to timely use your power ups to make sure your units can survive in the most critical situation.
